2016 Highlights
Commercial Department
dec-1.jpg 2016 has been another very successful year for the MES Commercial Compliance Department. With a steady and healthy increase in turnover from a wide range of sectors and clients, our flexible and proactive approach has resulted in strong growth this year.

We have been working on lots of new infrastructure projects, new schools, warehouses and offices. We were particularly proud to work with Center Parcs on their new £6m development at the Elveden Forest in Suffolk. The new hotel has been designed with a subtle entrance area leading to external balcony spaces which provide a relaxed and spacious setting within the woodland environment.

The Commercial Department worked alongside the project team during design and construction with services including dynamic simulation modelling and building regulations compliance calculations.

Thank you to clients old and new for a great 2016.
Neighbourly Matters Department
The Neighbourly Matters department have had a great year, providing our usual practical advice for rights of light issues on a variety of projects from a boathouse redevelopment in the rural South East to a £1bn project 15 minutes’ drive from Heathrow.

2016 also saw successful negotiations with neighbours to maximise the development potential of our clients’ sites that would otherwise have been held up by protracted legal disputes.

We also had great planning successes with our Daylight/Sunlight evaluations and reports supporting a number of planning applications on various schemes throughout the UK. Our Party Wall consultancy continues to grow, often hand-in-hand with our right to light consultancy and so we are looking forward to another busy and interesting year in 2017.

The team grows inside and outside of the office, with our very own Andrew Pickersgill, ‘Gilly’, due to become a father in the New Year – we wish him and wife Katherine all the best (and recommend he gets as much sleep now, while he still can!).
Planning Department
2016 has been another interesting and busy year for the Planning Matters department.

We have had a steady flow of new BREEAM projects and also became one of the first companies to be licenced to provide Home Quality Mark (HQM) assessments. We have registered our first sites for HQM and expect to see growth in this area as developers seek to make their residential schemes stand out from the crowd.

We are also still very busy providing Energy & Sustainability Statements for both existing and new clients. The introduction of the Zero Carbon Homes standard in the London Boroughs has made it even more important than ever to be sure to instruct the right consultant. We are very experienced in this area and would be delighted to work with you on your next project.

But most importantly and to round off our year, Andrew, our Sustainable Buildings Consultant, became a dad! Baby Jude was born in September and has been keeping mum and dad on their toes ever since!
Building Regulations Department
dec-2.jpg2016 has been a very busy and varied year. SAPs are becoming more detailed and involved, particularly when it comes to Thermal Bridging issues.

The testing side of the department, led by Matthew, has gone from strength to strength and we have broken our record for the largest building tested for air leakage - two factory units of over 7,600m2 floor area.

To cope with the increasing amount of air leakage and ventilation testing, we have welcomed another site engineer. Oliver Born joined our team in July and covers the Southern part of the country.

We have also been involved in providing PassivHaus consultancy on a project aiming for exemplary sustainability credentials. This has just received full planning consent and will be progressing to construction in 2017.

On a slightly different note, our Sustainable Buildings Consultant, Andy Taylor, broke his leg badly in March whilst playing football. Fortunately he’s recovered well (he’s only young!), but he does have one leg with rather more metal in it than the other!

Thank you to all our clients for entrusting your projects to the Building Regulations department this year and here’s to a productive 2017.
Building Testing Services – What we do
dec-3.jpgWith a growing team of engineers throughout the UK, we conduct air leakage testing on individual private properties, large scale housing sites, blocks of flats and large commercial buildings.

We pride ourselves in providing jargon-free advice and guidance to help clients meet their target on the day, as well as providing pre-inspections, drawing reviews and pre-completion testing that can greatly help in achieving very low air leakage targets.

MES also has many years’ experience in testing and commissioning domestic and commercial extraction systems, including MVHR, MEV, dMEV and intermittent fans. Our engineers provide valuable on-site advice should a ventilation system fall short of the challenging Building Regulations Part F requirements.

We also have a team of commissioning engineers which allows us to assist clients with large numbers of properties that are close to handover, as well as carrying out large block commissioning.

If you have a project that requires testing services, please contact Matthew Crowther.
We Focus on Focus Consultants
Earlier in the year we were delighted to announce that we became part of the Focus Consultancy Group. We still operate as a separate company but our clients benefit from a wider service offering. There is no change to personnel within MES and the company continues to be led by Alex Hole.

We are really excited about the opportunities this brings and look forward to being able to continue to provide our clients with the high quality, honest and diligent service we are renowned for. Focus Consultants, which is based at Phoenix Business Park in Nottingham and has branches in London, Leicester, Boston and Aubourn, offers a range of services in the fields of funding and regeneration, energy, project management and chartered surveying.

Newark to Norfolk – a family affair in aid of WaterAid
In September, 11 staff and family members took part in a triathlon-type challenge involving cycling, canoeing and walking. The cyclists embarked on 2 days of cycling, covering 180 miles between Newark and Coltishall in Norfolk. Day 3 saw the team take to the water for a 25 mile canoe trip on The Broads and the final day the team undertook a hiking challenge along the Norfolk Coastal Path.

We had a great few days and managed to raise £1,500 for WaterAid. Thank you to our clients, family and friends for supporting us.
Christmas Jumper Day – 16/12/16
Each year we like to outdo each other with our garish Christmas jumpers and raise funds for Save the Children. Check out our Facebook and Twitter pages for photographic evidence!
