Daylight and Sunlight Analysis for Planning
Daylighting and Sunlight Tests for Planning Purposes
Many planning authorities now require light issues to be addressed as part of a planning application. We can provide the required evidence and reports showing if neighbouring properties are adversely affected by a new development, extension or wall to assist with gaining planning approval. This can also be useful to assess the maximum envelope area of a new development to ensure it falls within allowable parameters.
Our reports are used to support planning applications, planning appeals or planning objections.
Guidelines for planning applications are set out in Building Research Establishment (BRE) Digest 209 ‘ Site Layout Planning for Daylight and Sunlight’. We can therefore carry out all the main tests; assessment of vertical sky component, daylight distribution test, probable sunlight hours test, average daylight factor and shadow path analysis.

Due to popular demand we are also running seminars at our London and Newark offices on this topic. For further information please click here.
We are also Right to Light surveyors and therefore carry out assessments for the common law Right to Light. For further information please click here.
“I just wanted to send a quick email to say how impressed I have been by your firm, and by Andrew.
I called at least 6 other companies to get quotes for this daylight/sunlight assessment, but it was only you who returned my call quickly and gave me a quote within hours. I was immediately impressed. Andrew is an absolute credit to your team and has been incredibly professional, friendly and efficient throughout the process. He’s a super-star! ……your phone number is now firmly on my recommended list. I so often deal with companies who let me down and constantly need chasing, so it’s a breath of fresh air to work with you. It’s important to let you know that, credit where credit’s due! Well done!”
