MES at NTU: Sharing Retrofit Expertise with Future Surveyors

A Visit to Nottingham Trent University
Max, a valued member of our team and Nottingham Trent University alumnus, recently returned to NTU alongside colleague Chris to deliver a guest lecture to students on the Building Surveying Degree and Apprenticeship course. Their session focused on the increasingly important topic of retrofit in the built environment, offering students practical insights into surveying and retrofit planning.
Setting the Scene
Chris opened the session by outlining the importance of a clear project brief and initial desktop study. Using a sample property, he walked students through key considerations such as building orientation, age, construction type, and current energy performance—critical factors that shape retrofit decisions.
Understanding the Building
Students then conducted a basic condition survey, using photographs and notes to assess the state of key elements including walls, roofs, windows, and services. Max and Chris highlighted the need to identify defects early—such as damp, structural issues, or poor insulation—and explained the remediation steps required before implementing energy efficiency measures.
Planning the Retrofit
Based on their surveys, students developed tailored retrofit recommendations, including insulation upgrades, window replacements, and renewable energy options. MES supported them in creating a planned programme of works with cost estimates, helping them balance sustainability goals with budget realities.
Navigating Compliance
The session also covered statutory and regulatory requirements. Students explored planning consent, Building Regulations, and British Standards. Max and Chris encouraged them to think like consultants—advising clients on legal obligations, technical standards, and best practice to ensure retrofit proposals are both compliant and effective.
Looking Ahead
To conclude, Max and Chris discussed when to seek specialist input, such as thermal imaging, structural assessments, or asbestos surveys. They also advised on involving professionals like structural engineers or energy consultants to ensure retrofit projects are safe, efficient, and future proof.
Final Thanks
We’re grateful to NTU for the opportunity to engage with the next generation of building surveyors and showcase the real-world impact of thoughtful retrofit planning. For Max, it was a fitting moment to return to his alma mater and share his passion for smarter, greener, and more efficient buildings. At MES, we’re proud to invest in people who share our values and champion local talent—especially when that talent comes full circle.
