BBC Children in Need & DIY SOS Supporting The Joshua Tree

The Brief
As part of the BBC Children in Need & DIY SOS initiative supporting The Joshua Tree, we proudly contributed to the development of their new premises by delivering SBEM calculations and air leakage testing, ensuring energy efficiency.
What Was Our Process?
Our process for lodging a non-domestic SBEM EPC started with a thorough review of the architect’s designs to understand the building layout, construction details, and proposed systems. We then engaged with key stakeholders, including architects and M&E consultants, to confirm specifications and ensure compliance with Building Regulations Part L.
Using IESve software, we performed detailed dynamic modelling of the building’s design to accurately assess its energy performance. This simulation reflected real-world conditions such as heating, cooling, lighting, and ventilation loads, giving us a precise understanding of how the building will operate.
Through this modelling, we identified opportunities to improve energy efficiency and recommend strategies to meet Part L requirements. Once we validated the model and confirm compliance, we generated the official EPC outputs and lodge the certificate via our accreditation portal, providing the client with a certified energy rating and all necessary documentation.
The Design Stage
At the design stage, we reviewed and interpreted the architect’s plans rather than create the design ourselves. We examined the proposed layouts, elevations, and specifications to understand the building’s structure, materials, and intended use. From these drawings, we extracted key data such as floor areas, construction details, and thermal elements. These formed the foundation of the energy model. We also defined how building zones would be represented in the model to reflect real usage patterns accurately.
Consultancy
During the consultancy stage, we engaged directly with key stakeholders, such as architects, M&E consultants, and project managers, to gather detailed information and confirm the design intent. We focused our discussions on HVAC systems, construction methods, lighting, and control strategies to ensure the energy model represents every element accurately. We clarified assumptions from the initial plans, resolve compliance issues, and recommended practical adjustments to improve energy performance. Through collaboration, we ensured the final model reflected the actual design and met all regulatory requirements.
Dynamic System Modelling
During the dynamic system modelling stage, we used IESve to simulate the building’s energy performance in detail. This powerful software modelled how the building operates under real-world conditions. We analysed heating, cooling, lighting, and ventilation loads across the year. Using accurate data from the design and consultancy stages, we assessed system interactions and identified inefficiencies or compliance issues early. We tested different design options and optimised performance to meet Building Regulations Part L. Once we completed a full analysis, we generated the outputs needed to lodge the final EPC.
On-Site Testing
For the DIY SOS Joshua Tree project, we conducted air leakage performance testing to verify the building’s compliance with air leakage requirements. The ATTMA accredited air tightness test involved using a blower door system to depressurise the building. By measuring the rate of air leakage, we were able to identify any unintended gaps or infiltration points in the building envelope where heat would be lost unnecessarily. Following this, we compared the result against regulatory standards, confirming that the building achieved the necessary levels of energy efficiency and overall Part L compliance.
Lodging the EPC
During the lodging stage, we completed the IESve model and confirm compliance. We then prepared and finalised all documentation for certification. We submitted the validated model data and EPC outputs through Elmhurst Energy, our approved accreditation body, to officially lodge the building’s energy performance certificate on the national database. After submission, the client received the certified Non-Domestic EPC along with a summary of the building’s energy rating and key performance metrics, confirming full regulatory compliance.
