JCB's New Golf Club Academy
JCB's New Golf Club Academy MES are delighted to have recently completed the energy compliance and certification for JCB’s prestigious new golf academy building adjacent to the world HQ in Rocester, Staffordshire.

Part of an 18-hole golf course development, the academy facilities will incorporate the latest virtual reality golf swing analysis and custom fitting software within two purpose built studios. The facilities will be available for use by both golf course members and invited guests of the company. For more information, please contact Paul.

Careful testing = profit making
Careful testing = profit making Since the introduction of the current Part L regulation, being able to quantify heat loss via thermal bridging in dwellings has become key in cost-effective specification. However, for non-standard projects there may not be relevant thermal bridging details that can be used in the SAP calculation. This means default values are used. The calculation of bespoke Psi-Values enables a more accurate quantification of heat loss via thermal bridging – which can result in significant specification and cost reductions.

Recently MES was asked to review a project of 120 new-build flats to see whether there was scope in the specification to reduce build costs. Having identified that the SAPs were using default values for thermal bridging, we undertook a series of bespoke Psi-Value calculations for the most common junctions in the buildings. These significantly improved the SAP performance which enabled the developer to save over £30,000 by revising other areas of the building specification. For more information, please contact Tom.

Introducing Chris Jones
Introducing Chris Jones Chris Jones is our Technical Director at MES. He has a Masters’ degree in Energy Efficient & Sustainable Building, as well as an Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Chris has over 15 years’ experience in providing sustainable building solutions and helped develop the neighbourly matters department, which he now leads.

He undertakes daylighting, sunlight and shadow cast analysis for planning applications, along with Common Law Right to Light assessments. Chris is also a qualified BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes assessor and has worked with some of the UK’s top developers, as well as housing associations and local authorities.

Chris is a keen runner and cyclist, both on and off road. He loves the outdoors and also enjoys wild camping and canoeing with his son. To contact Chris, please click here.

MES Charity Challenge 2017
MES Charity Challenge 2017 Currently the team total stands at just over 9,300kms of the 10,000kms target we set ourselves at the start of the year. The distance has been achieved by swimming, running, walking and cycling and on the last weekend in September Team MES came together for the Memory Walk in Clumber Park.

Our chosen charity this year is the Alzheimer’s Society and we are hoping to raise £1,000 for this fantastic charity. Every year we are overwhelmed by the generosity of our clients, family and friends. And if you are in a position to donate, we would be very grateful.

The Legal Right to Light
The Legal Right to Light Case law has highlighted the importance of understanding that the legal right to light is a separate issue to the planning requirements and can stop a development in its tracks.

Even if a Daylight & Sunlight report has been submitted as part of the planning application – a service we also provide – this does not mean that the parameters for assessing light loss in legal terms have been satisfied. This is a complex field which often arises in situations where there was previously believed to be no issue.
