BREEAM is an internationally established and widely recognised sustainability standard primarily for commercial buildings but also covering domestic refurbishment projects. BREEAM schemes consider all aspects of a building’s design, management and construction to ensure it remains sustainable throughout its life.
It is commonly used in the UK as both a planning and funding tool. Most will have experience of the standard, even if only indirectly, and it is only a matter of time before BREEAM is part of a project you are involved in. When involved in a project that requires BREEAM assessment it is important to understand how this may effect decision making during the design stage and the additional responsibilities this will place upon the project team members. BREEAM is not just about providing cycle storage and some PV on the roof; it will influence the design & management of the project, from early concepts & discussions with the client, through to hand over and beyond.
